GTMS Formula Student 2002
The event this year was held at the
Bruntingthorpe proving grounds, south of Leicester, England, June
30-July 3. The team's campaign started off rather inauspicously,
with some rather severe travel difficulties. We got to the airport
on time, but weather caused us to miss our connection to Birmingham
out of Chicago. This led to a 3:00 A.M. Denny's experience. The
next day, 3 of the team were routed Chicago-Boston-Paris-Birmingham,
while 8 went Chicago-Dallas-Paris-Birmingham. The latter group
missed their connection in Paris, again because of weather. Not
to mention that one student (who did not start in Atlanta), made
it to England as scheduled, but had a rather lonely time of it
until the rest of the team straggled in the next day. As one might
imagine, our baggage got lost, and it took a special trip to the
airport around midnight to recover it all.
The team setup their paddock on Sunday,
and the competition events started on Monday. Throughout the entire
competition, the weather was cool and rainy. Unlike the U.S. event,
which requires a dry track, the U.K. event will run in the wet.
The static events of design, cost, and presentation went quite
well. In fact, the team placed first in design, first in presentation,
and second in cost.
The dynamic events started Tuesday,
with the weather threatening all the time. We placed first in
skid pad, and 2nd in acceleration and autocross behind the University
of Toronto. On Wednesday, we managed to run the all-important
endurance event on a mostly dry track, clinching a repeat of the
overall winner crown.
